Our Curriculum

A guiding principle of teaching should be that students will take from a lesson what they put into it. We work hard to fully engage students from all backgrounds, meeting them where they are at academically, socially and emotionally.

MATH

Students will have access to individualized lessons, designed to help them grow at their rate. Our goal is to make sure that each student has a firm grasp of the basics before moving on to Pre-Algebra, Algebra and Geometry. There will be consistent one-on-one coaching. Additionally (no pun intended), students will utilize IXL, an online skills program to help them practice, practice, practice.

LANGUAGE ARTS

The ability to write clearly and cohesively doesn’t always come easy. We will work to strengthen writing skills and technique, and students will write with clarity, fluency and sophisticated vocabulary.  All students will engage in daily grammar and vocabulary lessons, and we will regularly share high-interest novels. In addition, students are expected to read independently, keeping a journal of their “Biblio Insights.”

SOCIAL STUDIES

Students will explore the history of the world in bite-sized segments, but with the common thread of the 5 W’s – Who, What, Where, Why, When. Students will build on foundational knowledge as they become critical readers. An examination of cultural changes and will help students build perspective. Modules include Geography, The Continents, Ancient Civilizations, Europe through the 1500s, the Age of Exploration, The Americas, Government, the U.S. Civil War, and Conflict and Resolution. Effective note-taking and active inquiry are skills we aim to improve.

SCIENCE

After receiving the information necessary to understand and articulate a topic, students will have the opportunity to teach each other many of the core principles of science. We will cover many topics, including life sciences, earth sciences, computer science, energy, motion, nature of matter, botany, biology, astronomy, and more. Students will also learn about the global impact of the work of the world’s most famous scientists and inventions. Students will sharpen their note-taking skills and learn the art of inquiry.

TEACHER’S CHOICE

So much to learn, such little time. The Teacher’s Choice series is dedicated to providing an introduction to various topics to help students gain a better understanding of the cultures and world that we inhabit.  Each topic is covered for four weeks, and range from Politics to Innovation, from Civil Rights to Space History.

OUT AND ABOUT

Learn by doing! Fridays are hands-on learning opportunities throughout our community. Students will spend time with local artisans and artists to learn new skills and share experiences in a variety of areas.  In addition, we will visit the Central Brevard Library monthly so that students may borrow books and/or conduct research for their independent studies. Students will share with each other what they are working on.
